Finally, a new hotel has arrived in Redding, California. With open arms, Turtle Bay Exploration Park has welcomed Sheraton Redding Hotel at the Sundial Bridge into its eco-park. Whether you drive through Redding during your travels or have plans to stop and stay awhile in this outdoor lovers paradise, this new LEED certified hotel couldn’t have been built at a better time. Redding is a hot spot in so many ways; from world-class fly fishing on the Sacramento River, to hiking along nearby Burney Falls trails or spending time at the Turtle Bay Park. It is high time that this upper state northern California location offered a hotel for the upscale traveler without city-slicker pricing.

The city of Redding has its share of family-friendly hotels, but it needed a well-respected brand such as Sheraton to lead the way with an eco-friendly hotel. I recently visited Redding to do a little fly fishing on the lower Sacramento River and was very impressed with the staff at the new hotel, as well as the quality of the food at the brand new Mosaic restaurant, located next door to the Sheraton.

When you walk into the hotel, guests are greeted by a stunning floor-to-ceiling wall of art by Healdsburg, California-based artist Bob Nugent. Titled Marmorata, the artwork was commissioned specifically for this hotel and reflects local nature in the flower-filled panels. Outside, the four entrance pillars and a large wall are surrounded in local river rock. It’s a nice touch that nature follows guests from the outside in. Even better that the hotel has its own private foot path leading directly into Paul Bunyon’s Forest Camp in the 300 acre Turtle Bay Exploration Park.

Both kids and adults will enjoy this Sheraton Hotel. You’re dog will love the hotel even more if the doorman who doles out dog treats is on duty. He not only greeted us by name, he introduced himself to Nala, our Labrador Retriever, and they were fast friends.

Once checked in, we took the elevator to the third floor for access to the SPG club floor. Other than a good looking dining room table in the center of the room, energy bars in a basket and a computer area off to the side, there wasn’t anything special about club access dining. Keep in mind that on my visit, the hotel had just opened, so check back for more offerings. For my money, it’s all about Mosaic restaurant.

We did enjoy our Sheraton Signature bed and Nala liked her dog bed that was supplied by the hotel, as were a set of food and water dishes. There is an additional fee for your dog, but both the hotel and Mosaic restaurant, with its outdoor patio, are pet-friendly. There are plenty of options to walk or swim your dog, as well. If you have kids to entertain, they have that covered, too. There’s an outdoor heated pool that is open year-round, fire pits for s’mores roasting, ping pong tables & corn hole games. If you like to keep in shape while you travel, check out the 1,200 square foot 24-hour fitness center, or take a walk along the Sacramento River trail, steps away from the Sundial Bridge.

If I lived in Redding, I’d happily eat at Mosaic restaurant just for the burger. This is not just any burger, it’s called the Wagyu hamburger “Baller Style” and it is truly fabulous. I don’t normally get excited about hamburgers. In fact, I didn’t even order the burger; I ordered the honey glazed Atlantic salmon. While my salmon was tasty, I couldn’t resist my husband’s hamburger with cream cheese, roasted onions, house made tomato jam, topped with a sunny side up egg and pretzel bun and don’t forget the french fries. We drive from San Francisco to Oregon via Redding on a regular basis – I’ll be back for my own burger.

Rates start at $119 and move up according to time of year and room type. On my visit, high speed internet was available throughout the hotel on a complimentary basis. There is a 24-hour business center and several computer work stations in the lobby. As is expected in Redding, (it gets hot here in the summer) the property is air-conditioned. Guests have the option of storing their luggage, if needed, before or after check in. The hotel will be introducing exclusive Turtle Bay experiences. Book your stay online at the hotel website or go through an OTA like Hotels.com or Travelocity.
